Everything you need to know about lab grown vs mined diamonds.
What is the difference between lab grown & mined diamonds?
– In terms of creation, lab grown diamonds are made above the earth in approximately 6 weeks, whilst mined diamonds are naturally formed deep in the earth's mantle over billions of years.
– Chemically and physically, lab grown diamonds are identical to mined diamonds
– All lab grown diamonds above 5mm in size go through third party grading and certification, much like mined diamonds. Each inscribed with a patent & certificate number and graded against the traditional 4Cs - a standard practice in the mined diamond industry. Learn more about the 4Cs here.
– The price of a mined diamond is significantly higher than a lab grown diamond.
– Lab grown diamonds can require a huge amount of energy to grow and often companies will use fossil fuels to do this. However, where possible we source lab grown diamonds created with renewable energy and certified 100% climate neutral and will always let you know if it is not certified. In this way lab grown diamonds can be a more sustainable and fully traceable option compared to mined diamonds which often use diesel-run machinery and large amounts of water, energy and earth.
