About Emerald: Emerald is a variety of the gem species beryl, a close cousin of aquamarine. It is coveted for its lush green colour, which can vary from green to bluish green.
What is the meaning of the Emerald? Emerald symbolises rebirth and renewal, reflecting new spring growth. It is thought to offer foresight, good fortune and youth. Emeralds are known as the poet’s stone and strongly associated with magic, memory, meditation, as well as truth.
What is the history of the emerald? The word, emerald is derived from smaragdus, ancient Greek for green. For centuries, emeralds have soothed souls and excited imaginations since the days of Inca kings and Pharoah. They were the favoured stone of Cleopatra, often used in both jewellery and in elaborate Egyptian burials as symbols of protection. Emeralds were mined in Egypt as early as 330 BC, but some estimate the oldest emeralds are 2.97 billion years old.
What is the provenance/traceability of the Emerald? Our emeralds are sourced from a mine in Brazil and we have a longstanding relationship with the supplier. We are working on finding out further details of the mine, cutting processes and ethical standards involved.
Caring for Emerald: Emeralds can be prone to scratching and require special care. It's important to avoid exposure to heat (including hot water), changes in air pressure (such as an airline cabin) and harsh chemicals. Use warm, mild soapy water and a toothbrush to clean.
